Someone messaged me on Twitter earlier today to ask why we aren’t using Framer – for a site, ostensibly, dedicated to Framer?
A few reasons:
- I want to be able to offer folks the ability to submit content (themes/templates/tutorials/etc) using a simple, front end form (very easy to do on WordPress, a lot tougher to do on Framer currently, for a dumb dumb like myself)
- I want people to be able to vote on (up or down) submissions, and share view stats, etc so that folks can see what the most popular content is, quickly – for a better user experience
- I need to be able to quickly and easily post links that pre-populate at least some of the content from the original source (pics, excerpt and link to the original content for affiliate sales, in particular) and that’s super easy to do on WP using a plugin (in this case, Snax) and would have no idea how to do that on Framer. (see the dumb dumb note in item #1)
- I’m pretty handy with WordPress – not so much, with Framer
- I want to serve up different content (via sidebars) on different collections of content for higher conversion rates – and potential partner offers – e.g. – a collection of themes/templates by a specific author, could have his or her preferred links in the sidebar with his or her own pictures, bio, store, offers, etc – essentially giving the site a mini multi-vendor style vibe – or at least, offering me that option if I want it. (this can be done on Framer obviously as well, but I’d need to buy a theme that was styled/coded for authors/vendors on products – and see the “I’m a dumb dumb” note on items #1 and 4)
- Cost – we already have pretty much unlimited access to WP new installs per the agency plans we pay for already – whereas to do this on Framer – with it’s own branded domain, would incur an immediate monthly cost of $25 or so a month. (i think)
- Some other less important reasons, too – but speed and scale and submissions and stats above, are the most important to me – for this sort of curated content site.
I will, of course, move this to Framer -when the above is all possible and doesn’t add a new expense to a bootstrapped passion project that isn’t really going to make money in the short term. (it will help me establish relationships though with other Framer designers/dev types – which longer term, is also a goal)
Finally – if you have a really good Framer theme for curated content that you think would make for a good match for Framerlove – reach out and say hi – or recommend one that you love – and i’m happy to take a look and buy it if it’s a good fit.
Teach what you know. Do what you love. Wake up the world with your work. – Ian
